Yearning and mindfulness

Published on Saturday, July 27th, 2019

This week’s image ties together two concepts that we have been talking about in class: yearning and mindfulness. I also have to throw in the idea of contentment (equanimity) which we focus on a lot as well. The quote above, brings in the mindfulness component that may be overlooked. As we finish off this month of July, yearning will likely take a back seat to the constant challenges of mindfulness and equanimity. Yearning will always been within us. Equanimity and mindfulness will likely be what we yearn for.

This week, I will get an extra challenge to my practice of equanimity as I search for my next steps with a health problem.I am yearning for answers, while I know some of those answers will challenge my equanimity. This week in yoga:

Monday Nite, July 29 from 6:30-8PM. I have tried to be aware of our heat wave. Let’s see what the environment is like and match our practice with our heat.

This is the only class for this week. We’ll be back on track August 5!

What is within you?

Published on Sunday, July 21st, 2019

Our culture is never at a loss for informing us of what we are lacking: clothes, a car, a”look”. Do you find yourself yearning for something you have been “told” you are yearning for? I advise you go deeper than the surface of your mind and listen. Listen intently and gently. Your yearning is there for you to identify.

This week in yoga:

Monday Nite, July 22 6:30-8pm. Let’s look for that open heart and mind that will lead us to our deepest yearning.

Thursday Chair Yoga, July 25, 3-4pm We’ll breathe and move!

Thursday evening, July 25, 5-6:15pm Let’s think about a slow practice with a yoga nidra capper!

Dreaming and yearning

Published on Sunday, July 14th, 2019

I remember during my younger years, I had a lot of dreams about the future. Mostly about how my life would unfold in rather specific ways. I also a repetitive dream for years that is too complex to relate here. Suffice it to say, this dream ended when my life came together in my 40’s. I sort of miss the dream that was both mysterious(in meaning) and comforting (familiar). I believe that this dream was about a yearning for a wholeness on several levels. Once I fully embarked on that part of my life journey, my subconscious no longer needed this dream and it was gone. These days, my yearning is less for myself and more for the world surrounding me.
As our summertime continues, and we perhaps yearn for the coming of the next season, let’s be sure we don’t miss the opportunities that are in front of us. Continue to year. Continue to be grateful.

This week in yoga:

Monday Nite, July 15, 6:30-8pm. As our Fresno summer and it’s temperatures have arrived, this week our practices will reflect our environment. Hopefully cooling and refreshing!

Thursday Chair Yoga, July 18 3-4pm. We’ll focus on balance and agility.

Thursday Evening , July 18, 5-6:15pm. Maybe a yoga nidra if the the weather warrants?

July: A month for yearning

Published on Saturday, July 6th, 2019

I have always felt like July and August are such long months. That’s likely because they tend to be so hot that activity is limited (at least outdoor activity). I find myself yearning for Fall about mid-August. As with everything, our attitude is under our control. I can turn these two months into a time for self-care, learning, and refocusing my energy. I plan on doing lots of yoga nidra practices and guided meditations. Getting out of the Valley heat and enjoying nature is also on the ticket.

This week in yoga:

Monday Evening 7/8, 6:30-8pm. First Monday Yin!

Thursday Chair Yoga 7/11, 3-4pm. Let’s discuss the difference between mobility and flexibility.

Thursday Evening, 7/11, 5-6:15pm More yin please!

August calendars have been sent out! Did you get yours?

“Listen, are you breathing just a little and calling it a life?”

Published on Saturday, June 29th, 2019

This is a line from poet Mary Oliver. In it’s simplicity, it reminds me to take those deep important breaths as I dive into life. This week, breath deep and live your yoga and practice your postures as you can.

There are no yoga classes July 1-5. The church is cleaning and sealing the floors. Who notices and appreciates the floors more than yogis? See you July 8!

Savoring the season

Published on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019

Late June gives us so much to savor! Wildflowers, our gardens, intermittently cool nites. Here is my yearly June savor from my flower garden, a dahlia called “Dark side of the sun”. From the foliage to the flower, this plant encourages me to slow down and savor all the beauty of June.

This last week in June, besides the flowers to savor, let’s savor our yoga practice. Here is what is in store for us this week:

Monday Nite Hatha, June 24, 6:30-8pm A gentle Ananda practice.

Thursday Chair Yoga, June 26, 3-4pm Come get a balance workout with Jenny G!

Thursday Evening Hatha, June 26, 5-6:15pm We’ll continue focusing on the gentle stretching and stretching practice that Ananda offers.

Curiosity: Never Stop

Published on Sunday, May 26th, 2019

As I searched the web for pictures of curiosity that spoke to me, I noted that most photos were of kids. That of course makes sense as little ones are the ultimate of curious as everything under the sun is new to them. The practice of Buddhism encourages a quality called, “beginner’s mind“. It encompasses the qualities of curiosity, openness, and wonder. To maintain the quality of beginner’s mind is to maintain curiosity in the face of all experiences, new and old. I think Yoga for Healthy Aging should add one more quality to healthy aging: Balance, strenght, flexibility, agility, equanimity and curiosity. Then, our body and mind will be truly cared for.

We have an abbreviated schedule for yoga this week!

Monday Nite, May 27, 6:30-8pm. Yes, it is Memorial Day, but a practice is still available. Join us if you aren’t spending time with family and friends.

No class Thursday 5/30 or Monday June 3. See you back Thursday 6/6.
